Am I A Writer?
Depending on who you talk to, their views on writing will be different: everyone or no one may be a true writer. Our culture demonstrates such common use of writing—from things such as novels to scientific research papers to text messages. In the traditional English class sense, I would not consider myself a natural writer; I have always favored the science and math classes and assignments and always dreaded the English papers, timed writings, etc. I always did fine in my high school English classes, don’t get me wrong, it just took me more effort or motivation sometimes to begin and complete those assignments. And I don’t think I necessarily just lack creativity because I like art and music, I just maybe lack the natural gift of words. However, the papers that had a very narrow focus and could be written using a certain formulaic layout I could usually dive into. This is probably one of my main flaws in writing. However, in high school I did take a two-class course called AP Capstone and though these classes I realized I do enjoy research and writing about the things I collect through the research processes and this is not a flaw but perhaps a strength to my more STEM mind. I like being told exactly what to write and being told how the teacher expects it to look and read. This semester I want to develop a more organic writing style while still retaining an intellectual tone. I also aspire to go more in-depth this semester with my analyses within my essays this semester because in high school I never achieved the depth that I always strived for when analyzing themes and bodies of work. Despite all this, I love reading and I do think that I have strengths in my comprehension abilities that will help me to understand the works we read and examine that will ultimately aid my writing and essays.
